What is Segmentation?

Segmentation is splitting your contact list into meaningful groups and treating the groups differently: customers versus prospects, Lagos versus Abuja, people who attended the webinar versus people who registered and missed it, big accounts versus small ones. A segment can be static (a fixed list) or dynamic (a rule like "opened a campaign in the last 30 days", which keeps itself current).

The opposite of segmentation is the blast: one message to everyone. Blasts are simple and occasionally right, but most sends are more effective when the message matches the group, because relevance is what separates email people welcome from email people ignore.

Why it matters

Segmentation is usually the single largest improvement available to an email programme: the same send, split by segment, routinely doubles engagement because each version can speak to the reader's situation. It also protects deliverability, since mailing only engaged segments keeps your sender reputation clean.

How it works in Medivot

Segments in Medivot are live rules over your CRM data: any field, tag, source, deal stage, booking history or campaign behaviour can define one, and the segment updates itself as contacts change. Campaigns, automation sequences and reports all target segments directly, so "email everyone who attended the webinar but has no open deal" is a filter, not an export.

Frequently asked questions

What should I segment my list by?

Start with the distinctions that change what you would say: customer versus prospect, location if your offer varies by city, engagement level, and how they found you. Add segments only when you will actually send the group something different.

How many segments is too many?

When maintaining the segments costs more than the relevance they buy. Most small businesses do well with five to ten live segments. If two segments always receive the same message, merge them.
